So you’re thinking about travelling somewhere but not convinced on South America? I will be heading to South America for 6 weeks in Mid-May 2018, and seriously the more research I do the more excited I get! I wanted to show you the reasons I chose to start off my world trip here, and why you should travel to South America. I’m sure it’s not for everyone, but I think it is seriously underrated.
South America is the 4th largest continent and is made up of a few major countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil. There are a couple smaller countries above Brazil but we will stick with these major ones. Please note that the safety of these countries heavily depends on the current local economics. I would not advise anyone go to Venezuela right now as it is very dangerous for tourists. Funnily enough, that was the one country my mom visited when she was younger. Guess it was safer back then…
Okay here we go, 3 reasons why you should travel to South America
First and foremost, the reason why you should travel to South America is because of their delicious food! South American food is influenced by their large ethnic population: Spain, Portugal, African and American Indigenous.
Some of their most famous dishes include:
- Empanadas – crispy pastry with a steaming cheese, meat, or vegetable stuffing.
- Chorizo – this flavourful meat has made its way around the world but it doesn’t get any better than from a restaurant or street stall in its home land of Argentina.
- Ceviche – fresh fish cured in lime juice and seasoned with chile peppers, onion and salt and pepper. Seriously one of the freshest most delightful dishes.
The mixture of flavours and style of dishes here will not leave your taste buds bored. So many great dishes were born out of this continent, why not go try them where they began! A more extensive look at their most popular dishes coming soon to my blog.
2. Sites / Nature
I could go on and on about the beautiful sites that South America has to offer. This is truly the main reason I picked South America to go first. Well to be completely honest it was because it was beautiful AND cheap!
In all seriousness though, if you are the type of person that likes seeing natural, iconic sites, this is one continent you cannot miss out on. From mountains, to ruins, to wildlife and beautiful lakes, this place has got it all.
Top 5 places to see:
- Galapagos Islands (Ecuador)
- Machu Picchu (Peru) – Want to learn more about Machu Picchu? See my post here.
- Salar De Uyuni (Bolivia)
- Lake Titicaca (Peru/Bolivia)
- Torres del Paine (Patagonia, Chile)
It was so hard to narrow down my list to only 5 places, but if I HAD to pick, that would be it. A complete list of must do’s in South America coming to the blog soon!
Last but certainly not least is the weather in South America. It is seriously such a beautiful climate, especially for us Canadians who are used to negative thirty celsius at times…
Firstly remember that with southern hemisphere places, the climates are reversed. So their summer would be during our typical winter months (November – March) and their winter would be during our typical summer months (May-August). However, it really depends on where you go. Some places are beautiful year round with a simply rainy season to watch out for; while others go from scorching hot to snowy. Complete list of South America destinations and best time to go coming out soon!
Well I hope this helped convince you on why you should travel to South America! I’d love to hear your thoughts on if you either live in or have traveled to South America before! What did you love about it? Hate about it? Comment below!
